I would be pretty remiss if I didn’t update on the first day of the year.  Kind of bad luck.   This whole weekend, I’ve been keeping the Land of Four Shadows in the back of my mind.  Thinking about the Highmen, their culture, their history, their architecture, how they raise their children and such.  I was inspired by Babylonian structures, but I don’t know anything about their history outside of the shape of their buildings.  So, in my head, I’ve slowly imagined how children are taught.   They wouldn’t have called themselves “Highmen.”  They would call their race something like “Clayborn” or such.  Names and words tend to shorten as civilization goes on, soooo…  Clayborn.  Claybon.  Clayb.  Claib.  Klaib.  There we go.  The “Klaib.”   The Klaib believe they were created, not by their god, but the first Klaib called Katr.  Katr was a lonely Highman and the only one of this kind.  He m...

Sketches are like blurry telescope images you keep having to focus and enhance.  Uncarved stones and splotches of wet paint aren't very helpful when asking what details are in a piece of art.  Sketches might be blurry, but they can give you a nice shape of things to come.  Plan is such a strong word for it.  Maybe more like an overture.  The mood of a piece echoed before it sounds.   So before we make a mystery, let's spoil the plot to ensure the sounds match the echo.  As such, we'll split the Land of Four Shadows into 3 layers of plot that are kind of happening at the same time. Layer One   Players are archeologists.  Basically, Thief Class without the greed for gold.  Fighters welcome for the more Indiana Jones types.  The setting is low magic, roughly on the technology and culture is roughly on the level of the 1900's to 1910's.  There are swords and axes and such barbarian tools of the Southern Continent, but also gu...

Dungeon23 is a long term project and I have a bad history with long term anything.  I certainly have trouble when any project requires more than 2 weeks of constant effort.  I'm saying this will be a challenge.   Who am I?  What's Dungeon23?  What's an RPG?  If you find yourself asking any of these questions, I NEED to interview you and figure out how you ended up on my blog.  Let's start at the start and get an overture for this blog. In order;  I am Grimwit , a starving artist.  I draw and hope someone gives me money.  That is literally my business model.  Dungeon23 is a challenge where I shall make a mega dungeon for an RPG one room at a time.  I plan on using a heavily altered Old School Essentials rule set, but the whole thing will likely be system neutral.  That means the mega dungeon I envision will be useful in Dungeons & Dragons, Lamentations of the Flame Princess, Traveler, Dungeon Crawl Classic.  ...
